Tera Term - Terminal Emulator for Windows

Tera Term, sometimes also referred as TeraTerm, or TeraTerm Pro, or just TT, is extremely popular open source free software terminal emulator (communication program) for Microsoft Windows. It emulates different types of terminals, from DEC VT100 to DEC VT382 and supports Telnet, SSH1, SSH2 and Serial Port connections. Tera Term has built in Macro scripting language that places it ahead of many similar free and commercial applications. Tera Term installation package includes several useful plug-ins and extensions. They all are distributed as Freeware.

Tera Term Development History

Tera Term was created in 1994 in Japan by Takashi Teranishi. The original pronunciation is [tera ta-mu]. Tera Term was released as freeware and won "Online software grand prize 97" competition held by Japanese tool portal Madonomori in 1997. Takashi Teranishi was developing Tera Term till 1998. The latest official version created by him is version 2.3.

Tera Term supports plug-in mechanism allowing to create many useful extensions to the application. One of them, TTSSH, which stands for Tera Term SSH extension, is well known to every Tera Term user. TTSSH was developed by Robert O'Callahan back in 1998 and extended Tera Term with SSH1 protocol support.

In 2002 Ayera Technologies, INC. released TeraTerm Pro 3.1.3. This version was supporting SSH2 and had few other new features. TeraTerm Pro 3.1.3 was distributed as freeware without source code.

In 2004, Yutaka Hirata, software designer from Japan, contacted Teranishi san and got the permission to resume development of the original open source version of Tera Term. He added his own implementation of SSH2 and many other new features. In 2007 few other software developers joined Yutaka Hirata and Tera Term Project team was formed. Today, over 20 years since the the very first release, Tera Term project is still alive and new versions are released every 3-4 months. The primary download location for the application is Tera Term home page on osdn.jp.

In January 2005, Boris Maisuradze together with Yutaka Hirata started Tera Term Support Forums on LogMeTT.com. Here they answer questions from English-speaking Tera Term users. Posting in these forums is the best way to suggest new feature or macro command, or to report a bug.

To avoid confusion with version numbers and to emphasize that Tera Term developed by Yutaka Hirata and his team is more recent than TeraTerm Pro 3.1.3 from Ayera Technologies, it was decided to give this branch of Tera Term version numbers starting 4.xx.
