I decided to give LogMeTT users heads up of what happens with LogMeTT further development and one of the main reasons of this post is to inform you that there will be significant changes in the way the application is licensed.

Version 2.9.3, that was released yesterday, is the last among 2.9.x versions, unless users will find and report bugs in it that require immediate fix.

Then we will move to LogMeTT versions 3.x.x. As you should expect, changing major version number means lots of new features and I already have the list of them containing over 40 items and it keeps growing.

LogMeTT 3.x.x will be available in 2 versions: Freeware and Professional. Professional version will have the set of additional functions absent in the Freeware version.

Both Freeware and Professional versions will require licenses that users will obtain from LogMeTT.com web site. The license for Freeware version will be free of charge while Professional version license will cost $14.99 per computer or $9.99 when purchasing 30 or more licenses. Another way of obtaining Professional license will be via donation that should be equal or exceed aforesaid amounts. The money received will be spent on operation and maintenance expenses of the site that runs TeraTerm and LogMeTT support forums.

Estimate time for the first LogMeTT 3.x.x release is end of summer 2008.

I will publish the list of new features as soon as I finalize it.

Quick status update on LogMeTT 3.x.x.

Due to the lack of time and the amount of changes that will be introduced, I postponed release of LogMeTT 3.x.x until 2009.

During last few months my main focus was on LogMeTT.com web site development. The site helped to get an idea of how many visitors we have and how many LogMeTT copies (roughly) are used world wide.

Currently I'm working on LogMeTT 2.9.5 that, hopefully, will be released until the end of 2008. This version will add few new features but the main purpose of this release is to revisit entire source code of LogMeTT, perform code cleanup/optimization and implement certain functions that will be part of 3.x.x. Among these functions are licensing and updated mechanism of tracking new software releases.

Here is another update of what happens next with LogMeTT.

As most of you know, the version 2.9.5 was released in March 2009 and later distributed as part of TeraTerm 4.63 package. Introducing licensing mechanism allowed me to see the actual number of the users of my tool. Right now, while I'm typing this post, the counter on the home page of this site shows 31,379 activations and keeps "ticking" . This is pretty impressive number and definitely motivates me to keep developing LogMeTT further.

So, what is coming?

I almost completed work on LogMeTT 2.9.6. Basically, the only thing left to do is update of the help file. Following the requests of many users, I replaced user-based licensing mechanism with machine-wide licensing. The new challenge here was to make the tool compatible with Windows 7 which reduced non-admin user access rights to Windows Registry even further than Vista. The license will be now stored in plain text file in LogMeTT installation folder, which, by the way, can now differ from TeraTerm home directory.

My previous 2 posts in this thread proved that I'm not very good in forecasting LogMeTT release dates . Still, I hope to release 2.9.6 until the end of October. As for versions 3.x, both free and Professional, please don't expect them to be ready for at least next 4-6 months.
